The graphic diary, arranged by Ari Folman and David Polonsky – a diary and not a novel, a work of reportage written during the events, when the end is unknown – is a wonderful description of the unsettling and familiar story of Anne Frank. Frank’s diary, which has become a canonical literary asset, has had a great many versions and translations. In this version, the pages of the diary sometimes appear  in classic comic form, with little text; sometimes an entire page is inserted with a single illustration aimed at expressing one of the ideas of the diary; and sometimes the text appears in its simplicity and fills the page, with small illustrations by Polonsky down the side or between the paragraphs. These illustrations, hand drawn in pencil and digitally processed, fill the diary with images expressing Anne’s movements and presenting her rich inner world.

In a few places through the diary, Polonsky and Folman have chosen to illustrate scenes or demonstrate the moods of the characters by relating to masterpieces from different periods in the history of art. The citation or gesture enables them to combine free thought and imagination, fantasy and humor, comics and other styles of art, graphic design and patch drawing – and make for a reading that is multilayered and appropriate for different ages.

The exhibition aims to show the range of possibilities contained in the medium of comics, and at the same time, provided evidence of an approach that respects the canonical text, but also stretches the boundaries of arrangement.
